sketchbook project: final product
it is finished
it has been mailed in
there are things that could have been executed better
but in the 11th hour i added 2 elements
the last photo and the packet of sand & sea)
which pulled it together for me
it took a LOT of time
as these projects all do
and tracking them in this way draws my attention to that
which hopefully will bring some insight
to…
my process

sketchbook project: sidebarII
hopefully
out of this mess
will come a finished product
it’s basically assembled
but it’s not hitting the mark for me
this has caused me to have bad dreams
and to consider,
at this late date,
a total rehab…
for @platea project VIII mashup
photo collage
could not resist another response to Joanie San Chirico’s full circle
with a mash up of my own incorporating her photo, my first response to Jonny Gray’s image as well as his original.

for @platea project VIII mashup
watercolor on inkjet photo
continuing from Joanie San Chirico’s beautifully colorful interpretation
i first printed an inverted image of her work so i could paint on it
and then decided to re-invert the result to fully experience the continuity

for @platea project VIII mashup
watercolor & ink on inkjet photo
i have been out of the social media loop for some time now
but serendipitously
(as this is so up my alley… ArtDialogue)
i checked into my twitter feed recently
and found @platea had a new project going.

sketchbook project: phase III
had a moment thinking i should’ve tried this as a traditional sketchbook, but no, this paper doesn’t work for me
if at first you don’t succeed… so i am now on my 3rd attempt; totally embracing preproduction now
all the elements are basically in place: pages adhered to each other, now cutting the “frame” overlays
uh oh… managed to destroy the binding while removing excess pages, do not hesitate: get right back on this horse
now on the 4th (& last) book: being uber slow and careful
decided not to stick the individual pages together this time; just going to tape ‘em up as a group
there are a couple of aspects that require real care because there’s no going back if i f*** up.
figuring out a template for sewing on the (2-toned) ribbon (check that sh*t out next post)
i usually like the backside of my embroidery the best, makes sense: it’s the process vs product thang
gon’na pull out all my old tricks: rubber stamps i haven’t used in eons; sometimes it pays to be a pack rat
sketchbook project: sidebarI
so this project has become a metaphor for the whole issue surrounding my process:
the loss of connection,
the frustration when things don’t look the way i want them to,
the conclusion that it’s just not meant to be
and then,
wanting to just giving it all up.
just the realization of this is enough to scare into completing it;
the stakes are too high if i don’t…
sketchbook project: phase II
so back to square one, a big problem here is that for a “sketchbook” the quality of this paper is shit
it doesn’t inspire me to draw, hence the mixed media route
unfortunately, it isn’t very well suited to pasting & gluing either
sidebar: posting phase I taught me that i want these comments to be synched with the image… it’s snowing again…
actually phase II is a lot about correcting the process: like realizing that this project requires pre-production
sidebar: oops, cutting always entails a little blood
so this book has morphed into a test run, requiring me to find a 2nd set of images & materials to experiment with
which is a good thing since this approach is TOTALLY not working… the paper is buckling…
the book won’t close, in a word: it’s a mess (but there is a seed of an idea in here somewhere)
and what was with that ribbon idea??? isn’t that why god invented tape?
sketchbook project: phase I
i kind of thought this was a no brainer for me
this sketchbook project
after all, sketchbooks & mixed media feel 2nd nature to me at this point
so i pulled out all these materials that i had been keeping in various locations
and dove in
at first i was really excited
but as i kept going, i didn’t feel a complete statement forming
and i got very discouraged
and definitely frustrated
and felt i wasn’t going to be able to pull this off
